Meet the West Georgia Wolves Men's Basketball Team
We have two new schools joining the Division I ranks in West Georgia and Mercyhurst. West Georgia is set to join the Atlantic Sun next season and they are looking to win year 1.
There’s no doubt that this is an older story, but it’s the offseason so we are all scrapping the barrel right now (don’t worry, we have another offseason review coming soon). However, we did a story on Mercyhurst earlier this year, which you can review below. Why not cover the other team transitioning to Division I this year, the West Georgia Wolves?
Meet the Newest Division I Member: Mercyhurst
This week, Mercyhurst University announced that they would be transitioning to Division I and joining the Northeast Conference starting in the 2024 season. Personally, I love it when new schools move to Division I. It’s usually a smaller school, someone who is going to come up and join the beauty that is college basketball. Unfortunately, they will have…
The University of West Georgia is a small/medium sized public university in Carrollton, Georgia, with a student body of nearly 13,000 students. Prior to their transition to Division I and their addition to the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Wolves were a member of the Gulf South Conference in Division II where they’d been a member since 1983.
The Wolves are a unique program because when they go on runs as a team, it’s for a significant period of time. Between 1980 and 1987, they went to the Division II NCAA Tournament 5 times, including 3 Sweet 16 appearances. Between 1994 through 2002, they appeared in 6 NCAA Tournaments and even appeared in the 2002 Elite Eight. Recently, they started another streak, appearing in the 2021, 2023, and 2024 tournaments.
The Atlantic Sun recently lost both Jacksonville State and Liberty University as both schools left the conference to join Conference USA, aligning themselves with more beneficial football opportunities. West Georgia now joins some of the recent additions over the last 3 years which includes, Austin Peay and Eastern Kentucky from the Ohio Valley Conference, Queens University from the South Atlantic Conference (Division II) and Central Arkansas from the Southland Conference.
The Atlantic Sun has been looking to expand and replace the losses in JSU and Liberty and they’ve done a great job thus far. Central Arkansas has been on the rise, Queens provided some incredible games last season, Eastern Kentucky went on a magical run in conference, Austin Peay is consistently solid, and West Georgia is coming to Division I off a hot streak in Division II. The Wolves will fit in perfectly during the 2024-2025 season.
